Health Plan Performance Improvement Project: HPV Vaccination

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) PIP was launched in 2008 by a collaborative group of eight health plans that serve

Minnesota Health Care Programs members: Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Itasca Medical Care, Medica, Metropolitan Health Plan, PrimeWest Health, South Country Health Alliance, and UCare.

The group’s focus is promote the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. The collaborative works to educate young female members and their parents about the benefits of the HPV vaccine. The group also works with providers to ensure they discuss HPV and the vaccine with their patients. Measurement data indicate an increase in the percentage of girls ages 11 – 12 (the recommended age for vaccination), receiving the full three-shot vaccination series. However, opportunity for improvement remains with just 30 percent of this population receiving the full vaccination series in 2009.
